11/05/2005 - Balmoral Show Tractor Handleing Success

Wednesday evening's activities at Balmoral Show were kick-started with the traditional YFCU Machinery Handling Competition in association with Johnson Gilpin & Sons Ltd.

As always the large crowd of spectators were treated to a display of skilful, safe and competent machinery handling as representatives from each of the six counties took part in a challenging course, which was once again designed by the team from the Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland.

Using 6120se John Deere Tractors and Redrock Buckrakes, each team had two opportunities to pick up four footballs using the buckrake, before driving through the starter gate and then depositing the balls at the other end of the Cattle Lawn into various sized containers. Points were awarded for each successful drop with a maximum score of 240 points available to each team, however penalties were awarded to those who did not comply with safety regulations, which tested both the drivers' tractor skills and safety knowledge.

Following three rounds of tough competition, County Armagh's team of Eric Crozier and Philip Reid from Collone YFC took the second spot with 175 points.

The YFCU would like to record its sincere thanks to Ivan Stevenson and all the staff at Johnson Gilpin & Co. Ltd for their continued sponsorship of this event, not only for the provision of equipment, but also for their practical expertise. Our gratitude is also extended to Terry Chambers and the staff of the Health and Safety Executive Northern Ireland for designing the course, and conducting the assessment on the evening.
